A Daughter’s Dance by Alyssa Grace

She flies across the wooden sea
Her little hands move lithe and free
A graceful step, your wings descend
How could we know your dance would end?

Our eyes were yours to keep until
Beneath the stage, your dance was still.
And now she flies on a stage of white
Her turns are flawless, her face alight.

Where once we watched and guarded you
We feel your eyes through panes of blue
And there above the clouded sky
We know our swan will ever fly.

"Roller Coaster Brain" to Joe

Some kids have brains like a country road, winding long, soothing and slow,
with lots of time to think and see, the flowers and birds and trees that grow.
Some kids have brains like a super speed freeway, straight and smooth with no stops at all,
Thoughts flying fast as a sporty red car, always in gear not wanting to stall.
Some kids have brains like a bumpy back alley with dust flying everywhere.
Jostling ideas into scrambled up notions, making it hard to get anywhere.

All of these brains are exceptionally unique; each one has a different way
of getting ideas from one place to another, transporting our thoughts everyday.
But some kids have brains like a roller coaster, with rickety clickety tracks,
And once they are on it’s hard to get off, and their brain takes a ride to the max!

At first as the brain-coaster-train inches up, creaking as slowly it climbs,
it’s rider says, “Hey, this is way too much work and it’s taking a very long time!
I can’t see the top, there’s no end at all and the people down there look so small.
They don’t understand how it feels on this ride. I’m frightened and what if I fall?”

Some riders may cower way down in their seats, some riders may even scream.
Some choose to jump off of the brain-coaster train before the reward the have seen.

For at the top of the hill the brain gives a thrill as it’s rider prepares for the plunge,
but waiting to drop the brain-train my stop to take in the view as you lunge.
Then down with the speed of a hundred fast horses your brain couldn’t stop if it tried.
Each rider’s heart leaps at the joy and the ease as the train coasts as if it could fly.

“What’s this?” asks the rider, “it can’t possibly be,
a curve on the track, why we’ve got to turn back!”

“And there up ahead,” you shout in your head, “a loop maybe fifty feet high!
I can’t go on that, take me back! Take me back!” But coaster brains never reply.

They’re busy, I tell you, taking you places that some children never go,
For the road your brain uses simply infuses all routes together, you know.
So bumpy and smooth, calm and then speedy your brain-coaster-train gets you there.
It’s not the same as some other kids’ brain; the way that you think is quite rare.

And with some practice and practice and practice in time, you’ll get used to the uphill climb,
And thrill at the top after all of the work, for the view from up high is quite fine.
You’ll learn how to buckle up tight as you soar down the track at a might fast pace,
And when through the loops as you twist and you swoop, confusion will turn into grace.

At last the train slow and heads for the station; rails squealing and nearing the end,
but before you relax, take a look at the tracks and see just where you have been.
And muster your strength and breathe really deep for just when you think you will stop,
the brain-coaster train starts a-movin’ again, heading straight for the top.

Oh how I wish as I watch the train start, that there was room for two!
I’d hold your hand and cover your eyes and shield you from the view.
But a brain-coaster-train, just like everyone’s brain, is occupied only by one,
so I’ll blow you kisses and watch from afar, waiting until you are done.
